Pumpkin Patch Weeds #873231

Asked June 15, 2024, 1:14 PM EDT

Hello, first-time pumpkin grower here. I am wondering how to get rid of weeds growing in my small pumpkin patch with different varieties of pumpkins. The whole patch is covered in weeds. The pumpkin plants have started sprouting and are a few inches tall. Will the vines eventually overtake the weeds? Does a vinegar-dish soap spray work? Will that harm the plants? Thanks in advance!

Hi Jana,

I see you really do have a problem . That's a lot of area to work on. I would use newspaper. I would lay down 3-4 sheets of newspaper, weighted with rocks, bricks, boards, whatever and try to block out the sun and kill the grass and weeds. You may need more layers of paper, but, it can work really well and, by the time the squash get going they should help shade out the weeds. It's better if two people do this because the wind will make it difficult.

Good luck, ( next year lay down the paper when you plant your seeds)
