What is this growth under my hedge #873227

Asked June 15, 2024, 12:53 PM EDT

I noticed this growth under my hedge, and don't know what it is or how to get rid of it. Is it harmful?

Baltimore City County Maryland

Expert Response

This looks like a fungus called Zylaria polymorpha (commonly called 'Dead Man's Fingers'). This type of fungal growth primarily moves into dead or damaged wood. It can also grow out of decaying wood mulch. What is the condition of the shrub (or tree) it is under?

No treatment is suggested for this. It is a natural type of wood decay fungs, and you can just leave it.

Thank you so much for this reassuring information. I have lived in this house for 71 years, and the hedge has always been there. Unfortunately my neighbor allows all of her weeds to grow unchecked, and ivy and other Weeds have invaded my hedge, and it's not as healthy as it used to be.
Thank you again for the excellent information.
