ASPEN SHOOTS THROUGHOUT LAWN #873209

Asked June 15, 2024, 10:20 AM EDT

We have a few Aspen in periphery of our yard. Maybe 3. There are Aspen shoots throughout the lawn. They are cut back when we mow but the grow 5x as fast as the grass. Can they be removed? How hard is it?

Expert Response

Hi Susan,

Thank you for your question about eliminating aspen shoots. This is a very frustrating landscape problem, and a common issue in Central Oregon. Aspen roots are very vigorous. Aspens are genetically designed to be grove trees, so unfortunately, there is not much you can do to stop the roots from spreading. You can mow them down or pull and cut them out where possible, still, the shoots may continue to return.
