Expert Response

Hi Mary,

Did the tree produce a lot of apples this year? If so, the tree may just be doing some self-thinning/shedding. Also, it's been very hot and the tree may drop apples to make sure it can support the ones remaining with its resources.

This is commonly called "June Drop" and it's described here from the U of MN: https://apps.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/fruit/apple/droppedfruit.html
