We recommend that Marylanders use any of the recommended turfgrass cultivars when seeding lawns, since cultivars on that list (which is updated every summer) have been locally tested for resilience to our weather and disease pressures.
The most widely-grown lawn type in Maryland is the cool-season turf tall fescue, though warm-season lawns popularly use zoysia. Cool-season lawns are seeded in spring or (ideally) autumn, whereas warm-season lawns are seeded in late spring or early summer. It's typical for fescue-based lawns to include a small percentage of other cool-season grass types (either Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or both), whereas zoysia turf tends to be purely zoysia, and less commonly seeded and instead grown from plugs or sod. Given that, we presume the seed you were given was a tall fescue blend, but aren't certain.
