Invasive vs. Native Thistle in Lake County #873147
Asked June 14, 2024, 4:00 PM EDT
Good Afternoon,
I live near Lakeview, OR and own approximately 80 acres rangeland. I have been implementing various projects to improve the ecosystem health. My next project is going to focus on eradicating invasive plant species such as Medusa head, Mediterranean sage, and others. This plan includes removing the invasive thistle species. However, there are at least four thistle species on the property. One or more of which are native. Are there any resources available to help identify the different thistle species in my area?

Hi, Nick, this document outlines the thistles of concern in Oregon:https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/documents/ec1288.pdf
This site from North Dakota State University has some great info: https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/publications/crops/perennial-and-biennial-thistle-control-w799
as does this one from USDA: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd563016.pdf
the last one also has a chart that can help you determine which thistle(s) you are dealing with. Management strategies will vary depending on which type you have.
I hope you find this helpful, Nicole
