I have a question about a pair of pods—cocoons maybe—that appeared on a bamboo pole in our garden. They are large, about 3-4 inches long. It may be one structure with two sides. Any ideas?

I owe you an apology. Our weird pod turned out to be a piece of gaffers tape left on the bamboo pole from a previous year! Once we got a very warm day I guess the glue released and it unfurled a bit. It was very high on the pole so that we couldn’t get a close look.
It’s like that Charlie Brown cartoon—Charlie: look at that dead butterfly. Do you know it came all the way from Brazil? Lucy: (looking closely). That’s not a butterfly. It’s a potato chip. Charlie: How did a potato chip get here all the way from Brazil?
