The answer seems to be incomplete. I am trying to identify the green object hanging from a branch in a cherry tree on my property. It is about 1 or 11/2 inches in diameter and there is a hole in the bottom where something apparently exited. I am thinking some sort of insect nest.

This is likely a gall. Galls are formed by excessive cell division in response to bacteria, fungi, insects or environmental stress. In some cases, insects lay eggs in the galls. Some trees are genetically more susceptible to the formation of galls.
