Tree Damage #873105

Asked June 14, 2024, 12:26 PM EDT

My mountain ash tree was recently damaged by a neighbor child who hacked at it with a small shovel and wondering if a wound like this can heal or if it means the tree may not survive? The cuts are not fully around the truck but the cuts are through the bark and into the next layer of the tree.

Expert Response

What were they thinking? The tree will likely survive! The inner bark around the wounds will grow and eventually cover the opening. No need to paint or treat the wound. If there is loose or fragmented bark, you should cleanly trim off the loose pieces.

I noticed that above the damage there is a dead stub where a branch was removed. The preferred practice is to leave no stub when pruning off a branch. the bark cannot grow over a stub end. It is important to leave the branch collar, which is the swollen area where a branch is attached to the trunk.
