Columnar Oaks in Minnesota #873100

Asked June 14, 2024, 11:55 AM EDT

We are interested in a columnar oak for our property, specifically either the Crimson Spire or Street Spire Oaks which are hybrids of White Oak and English Oak. I see many columnar oaks around, but notice the central leader of many of them dying. Others look just great! How well do the two varieties listed above do in the metro area? Is there experience at the Arboretum you could share? I would like information that is NOT sourced from a sales website. I can't seem to find actual performance-related information on the internet from a non-biased (non-profit) source. Thanks very much.

Good Morning,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

We are volunteers who answer yard and garden questions online. I am not familiar with the Arboretum experience with these hybird oaks.

Here is a link from the Morton Arboretum on columnar oaks: https://mortonarb.org/search/?page_number=1&search_string=columnar%20oaks&from_back

If you scroll down, they mention the hybrids you are considering. They discuss the potential diseases but do not address the central leader dying.

Here is another link with the history of the hybrid: https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/quercus-bimundorum-crimson-spire

Good Luck!
