How to control Houttuynia Cordata (Chameleon Plant, Fish Mint) #873098

Asked June 14, 2024, 11:39 AM EDT

Do you have any tips on controlling houttuynia cordata? We have some that has taken over an area bound by a brick wall and porch, driveway, and a concrete sidewalk. It has spread to the outer edge of the sidewalk, maybe due to root growth. We also have banana trees in the area that we wish to preserve, so using herbicides is likely not an option. Though it is considered a leaf vegetable in Asia, I am not inclined to use it for food. The only solution I can think of is to dig up the roots each fall/winter. Thanks, Todd Pasley

Good luck!  I’m not sure you can effectively pull it.  I recommend you use a herbicide.  Consider cut the paint.  Usually this technique is for woodies, but might work on Houttuynia.  See https://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2009/jun/112401.htm. Alternatively, you can use a more dilute solution of glyphosate (as in a spray) and paint leaves.  The chemical will be transported to the roots.
