tiny caterpillars stringing down #873094
Asked June 14, 2024, 11:20 AM EDT
We live in Divide at 9100'. This year we have a ton of what seems like single strand spider webs flowing down from the trees with tiny little caterpillars on the ends of them. I am wondering what they are and if they are a problem to our trees?

Expert Response
Hi Janet,
Without pictures, a description of the caterpillars, or knowing what the host tree is, I have no way of knowing what the caterpillars are. But they are most likely not a problem for your trees. Caterpillars are well controlled by a variety of natural enemies (birds, paper wasps, parasitic wasps, etc.). Caterpillar damage to trees is often insignificant. And even if there is a high population this year, that is unlikely to persist year to year.
