Do Trees with Compound Leaves prosper in Tree Tubes? #873081

I am slowly re-planting a forest in an old field to expand upon a nearby forest remnant. Previously, I have planted mostly oaks, tulip poplar, and other simple leaf trees and they seem to do well in the tree tubes so far. For this fall, I am thinking if incorporating hickories and black walnut in the next phase since they are the other major components of the existing mature forest nearby but I did not know if they would do well in tree tubes given how small the circumference of the tube is compared to the tree's leaves and woven wire fencing would be the preferred way to protect from deer browse.

The wire fencing should suffice for protection as long as the deer can not reach over it. making it wide or tall enough -but not wide enough for them to jump in, deters them well. You also lesson the risk of the tree tube getting too tight on the tree as it grows and you are correct with the air flow around the leaves. The fencing would probably be better in this case and more of a longer term option.
