Summer Crush begonia not blooming #873052

Asked June 13, 2024, 9:37 PM EDT

For 2 years my Summer Crush was prolific with blossoms. This year it appears very healthy - growing but no blossoms. The exception is a small branch that is new this year, which has two blossoms. The location has to be correct, as in the past was a great performer. Am terribly disappointed. Joan Moffatt

Expert Response

Joan, Good question! I'm assuming you meant Summer Crush Hydrangea. There are many causes to not bloom. Improper pruning is very often the cause but not with the Endless Summer varieties. Summer Crush should bloom on both old wood, flower buds that developed last summer. And, on new wood, which yours has done. Drought conditions last summer and fall are likely why your has not bloomed well this season. Because yours has done well in that site in the past, I would assume that with a 'normal' summer rainfall this summer your hydrangeas will recover and bloom in the future.
