Split in the trunk of beech tree #873045

Asked June 13, 2024, 8:08 PM EDT

I have a Tri Color Beech tree. It’s gorgeous! This year I noticed a new split in the bark, 3-4’ long, seems to hold moisture. Should I worry? Is there something I can do? Thanks

Expert Response

Hi Janice, thanks for the question.

Bark splitting is not that uncommon is thin barked trees. The crack most likely is a result of quick temperature shifts in late winter. The wound is usually not fatal; however, it can provide and opening for insect and disease. Removing loose bark and tracing the wound are proven ways to help the tree heal naturally.  Check out the following links:

I hope this is helpful.
