cherry tree oozing at the end of each branch #873041

Asked June 13, 2024, 7:42 PM EDT

Hello. I have a Rainier cherry tree that in recent weeks has started oozing a somewhat clear stickiness and it's causing the leaves at the very ends of each branch to curl up. It's attracting insects as well.

Expert Response

Hi Jeanmarie,
Thank you for your cherry tree pest question. I cannot definitively tell from your photos; however, it may be black cherry aphid. This pest feeds on the tips of new growth causing curling and distortion. The aphid produces a sticky substance referred to as honeydew, which can attract other insects.

This pest and management options are described in the following publications. You can compare the information and photos to your tree.

Thank you so much! The photos of the aphid damage do look like what's happening on my tree.

I appreciate this, thank you again.
