Hello—I live in Hutchinson and purchased a home about 2 years ago. There is a lovely mature Japanese Lilac on our patio that is behaving strangely this year. This is the first year the tree has displayed symptoms.
Unfortunately, the tree is struggling to grow leaves. I’d say only about 25-30% of the canopy has grown new leaves. Obviously it did not bloom.
I recently went into the tree to see if there were dead branches to remove and found very few. In fact, nearly all of the branches, big and small, are green. The leaves that are growing seem small but don’t appear to show any signs of disease.
I have not fertilized the tree and it has been pruned twice since we moved in December ‘21. It receives full sun and has a 20-30 year old Elm about 6 feet away.
In terms of pests, I have noticed a lot of ant activity along the trunk but otherwise nothing observed.
Thank you!

Expert Response
With this much decline on your tree I would recommend contacting a local tree care company and request a consult from an arborist. They will be able to look at the full tree to determine what may be going on and give recommendation for next steps.
