Blueberry plant has no berries #873006

Asked June 13, 2024, 3:58 PM EDT

One of four blueberry plants has scant leaves and no berries. Three feet away are luscious plants. I did poke a sign in front of the sickly plant but I don't think the sign caused this. ?? I know they are shallow rooted. I will include a photo of the sign and plants. Why is this plant without berries and now getting leaves? The new leaves look good.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.  A lack of fruit is typically a result of two issues:  one is a lack of pollinators and the other is a problem with the soil/pH/nutrients.  With no information about any of these, I can only speculate, but your plant's leaves appear to be yellow, a sign of a deficiency of nitrogen.  The pH of your soil may not be accurate, which prevents uptake of nutrients of several categories.

First, I suggest that you read the following comprehensive guide to growing blueberries:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pub/ec-1304-growing-blueberries-your-home-garden
Second, I suggest that you get your soil tested for pH and nutrients, and request recommendations for soil additives to grow healthy, productive berries.  The closest lab for this can be found here:  https://al-labs-west.com/

I hope this can tell you how you can get luscious berries for next year.  Good luck!
