General Environmental Questions #872986

Asked June 13, 2024, 3:05 PM EDT

To whom it may concern; My home is surrounded by oak trees and the street on where I live has many oak trees. The caterpillars have almost denuded the trees on my property and on the street. The usually dense and full canopy of oak leaves now looks like a very thin lacey veil. My house is covered with (and I am not exaggerating) thousands of caterpillars. I have knocked them down with a power sprayer, the garden hose, and the leaf blower. (It doesn’t even phase them.) I have put duct tape (sticky side out) on 5 of the largest oaks on my property. Nothing stops the onslaught. I have taken to scooping them into water filled with bleach and letting them dissolve slowly before pouring it off in another section of my property. Unfortunately, although I have killed hundreds, it isn’t impacting the thousands. I am so afraid this will kill my stand of oak trees. Can you answer my questions below as soon as possible: 1. Is there anything I can do to protect the oaks at this point or help them “come back” from this plague? 2. How can I prevent the moths themselves from laying more eggs as they start to fly about? 3. Will I have to take down the trees that have been denuded to prevent them falling on my home?

Expert Response

I completely understand your fear and frustration as i am dealing with the same issue at my house. It sounds like you’re doing everything they are telling us to do to combat the spongy moth: killing the caterpillars, and preventing as many as possible from climbing up beyond reach. The next stage is after the moths lay egg masses. They are mustard colored and fuzzy and easy to scrape off into soapy water and kill. Hopefully this is the end of the multi year cycle. You can also water your trees to give them a boost to help re-leaf out.
