composting in the city #872985

Asked June 13, 2024, 3:05 PM EDT

Most of my compost is "brown". What "green" besides coffee grounds does NOT attract rodents? I have read much of the lit on how to keep a compost heap rat-free, but those critters are smart. So, it's composting these days ONLY stuff they don't find to their taste. My "brown" includes shredded leaves and shredded paper. My only green is coffee grounds and tea leaves. Anything else? In advance thanks.

You can review our composting page for a list of greens. Maybe grass clippings that are pesticide free if you have any? Some tea bags may contain microplastics and not all labels will share that information, so if you are putting in the entire tea bag, you could rip it open and just compost the leaves and throw out the bag.

Here is a guide you can also check out on how to keep rodents out of compost bins: https://ilsr.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Oh-Rats-How-to-Avoid-Rodents-at-Community-Composting-Sites-2.pdf
