Turf Issues #872983

Asked June 13, 2024, 2:59 PM EDT

I have brown, dead grass spots throughout my yard. (See photos) They seem to only occur in full sun areas and not in the shaded areas. Do you have any ideas what is causing these? How do you recommend I get rid of them?

Expert Response

Thanks for your questions.

In order for me to provide my best answer, I need some further information.

1).  In both pictures, I detect straight lines of yellowing grass.  Within the last two weeks or so, have you or a lawn service applied fertilizer using a wheeled spreader?

2).  Did you see these yellowing stripes earlier this season (early to mid-May)?

3).  Have you seen these yellowing spots in prior years or is 2024 the first time that you have observed them?

I'll look forward to hearing back from you.  Thanks for using our forum

Thank you for your response. I apologize for not responding sooner but I’ve been out town.

1) I have not used a wheeled spreader since applying fertilizer in April.

2) I did not notice the yellowing stripes in early to mid-May.

3) I noticed a small number of these yellow spots last year but no where as many as this year.

If it means anything, these yellow spots seem to only be occurring in parts of my lawn that are in full sun. My shaded areas do not have any yellowing.

Thank you for your assistance.

Thanks for your response.

I suspect that you have a fungal infection in your turf. The University of Wisconsin has an excellent diagnostic facility. I suggest that you contact them regarding your submitting a sample of your turf for their analysis. See:

https://tdl.wisc.edu/

Before submitting anything, contact them as to the best way to send in a sample.

Good luck. Thanks for using our forum.
