Sickly common maple tree #872967

Asked June 13, 2024, 1:58 PM EDT

In our yard, we have several common maple trees grown from volunteers in our son's Corvallis yard. One is 25'-30' tall. The trunk has turned black and leaves came in sparsely this year. It is in the lawn which is regularly watered with a sprinkler system. Should we have the tree removed? It won't really be missed; there are several other trees in the greater vicinity - 3 more maples, ancient pear, dogwood, holly, aspen, cedars, magnolia and sequoia. Peggy

Expert Response

Hi and thanks for your question about removing a maple tree. It sounds like you have already made up your mind the tree needs to go. I will agree that too much water is a bad thing for maples, and the black trunk is surely not a good sign. You can always have an ISA certified arborist come look at it if you are still not sure and here is a site to find one near you.
