Wilting honey locust #872949

Asked June 13, 2024, 12:19 PM EDT

The leaves on my 6 year old honey locust are browning and wilting. I have not watered it due to all the rain. There are no insects on leaves or trunk. How can I help it recover?

Expert Response

Good Morning Elliot,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Please click on the following link about honey locust trees: https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/PLANTS/honeylocust.html  This information also has links to possible diseases of the tree.

The honey locust tree sprouts leaves late in the season. I am wondering if you watered the tree over the past few years of drought? Trees are slow to react to the drought.

From viewing your photo, it appears the tree may be fairly close to the road. Could the tree be reacting to road salt residue from the street?  Would there have been any other damage or trauma to the tree?

Here is another link from Illinois Extension about the tree and possible problems: https://hyg.ipm.illinois.edu/pastpest/200107d.html

Good Luck!
