Roach, termite, or something else #872924

Asked June 13, 2024, 11:11 AM EDT

Found this dead on top of dryer in our laundry room. We recently had some water damage and hoping this dead bug is not something major or indicative of any type of infestation.

Expert Response

Unfortunately we can't see enough detail to concretely ID the insect, but are happy to look at more photos if you still have it and can take a clearer photo. Placing a ruler next to it will not only give us a sense of scale but can help the camera focus on the details. We can say that it does not look like a cockroach or termite, and it might be a beetle, which would probably not be related to any water damage. If the room sits near an exterior wall that has an outdoor light, many night-flying insects are drawn to porch lights and other sources of night light, and then can wind-up indoors as they wander about afterwards.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I thought it looked like a beetle but was thrown off by the wings.
