Woodland Strawberries not blooming #872902

Asked June 13, 2024, 8:07 AM EDT

I planted Woodland strawberries a few years ago and they have never fruited. The plants look healthy to me, but I don't think they've ever even flowered. They get dappled sun, which I thought was supposed to be enough for this variety. Help! I'll appreciate any ideas. We live in Minneapolis. Thank you!

Expert Response

Even Alpine Strawberries need sun. Ideally they should have full sun to part shade. More sun will equal more berries. While they do tolerate more shade and June bearing,  they would do best planted at the edge of a woodland.

You will continue to get lush green plants in mostly shade but they will probably never fruit

Ok, thanks for this! I kept thinking maybe they just needed to get more established, but they looked so good this year, I thought there must be a problem.
I will transplant them to a sunnier location. When is the best time to do that?

You could transplant them now but make sure to keep them watered if this rain doesn’t continue. Otherwise you could move them in the fall - jus not the heat of summer.
