Hay pasture black sooty dust #872895

Asked June 13, 2024, 1:16 AM EDT

I just cut and baled one of my pastures in Clackamas county. In parts of the field there was a lot of black dust that covered my hay equipment. Reminded me of fire soot. I put lime on this field early spring this year. I noticed someone selses field near Beaver creek had the same dark dust when they were haying. Any ideas?

Expert Response

Did you notice any black mold on the hay during harvest? Are there any soil/drainage or management differences in the parts of the field where the black dust was ?

What was the moisture level of hay during harvest?

Hay should be dried to moisture levels of 15-20%.
