Any ideas about what kind of animal has been making golf-ball sized holes(not very deep) in my yard?

There are several possibilities for this kind of damage in a lawn. Here is a fact sheet that may help you ID the culprit.

In addition to the animals in the preceding fact sheet skunks can also dig holes looking for grubs and other insects. Here is a link to information about how to determine if it is skunk damage.
