Cherry shrub spring die off #872870

Asked June 12, 2024, 7:48 PM EDT

We have 1 Romeo and 1 Juliet cherry shrub planted 3-4 years ago. Since their first full year in-ground, they have flowered wonderfully. Then the new growth wilts an dies off and the blossoms fall, no fruit results. Location: Beaverton Oregon. Sun exposure: full sun. Please advise. See attached photos

Expert Response

Thank you for your question.   There are over 40 diseases that afflict cherry trees, many of which cause wilting of new leaves.  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-and-disease-descriptions?title=cherry

Since we cannot diagnose diseases that are in the soil just through photos, I suggest that you send leaf and soil samples to the OSU Plant Clinic for examination:  https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/how-submit-plant-materials

They can diagnose the problem(s), and advise whether this can be treated.  Good luck!
