Pesky holes in garden #872842

Asked June 12, 2024, 4:34 PM EDT

Something is digging holes in my garden. I’ve had occasional hope before, but whatever’s there this year is more persistent than ever. At one point a plant was uprooted, but when I put it back, it has not been uploaded again, but I’m concerned about my small house garden. One of the garden stores recommended a poison to my husband, but I said no because of the dog & because we’re growing vegetables

Expert Response

We do not recommend using any sort of poison bait.
Unfortunately, determining the culprit behind hole-digging is outside of the realm of our expertise (at least when it appears to be done by a non-insect, given the size pictured), but you can inquire with wildlife biologists at the MD Department of Natural Resources. An email can be sent to <personal data hidden> (especially if you want to share photos) or, if you would like to speak to someone, they have a Wildlife and Heritage Service phone number at<personal data hidden>. The phone line is staffed during regular business hours, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, except state holidays and weekends.
