laundry #872836

I have two down comforters and a couple of very old down and feather pillows that I really love. I ruined a down sleeping bag many years ago washing fit. It got all clumpy and flat, so I hesitate to do this. I have been researching online and am finding lots of conflicting information. I will take these to a laundromat that has super some super large washers. I think from my reading the best is to use warm water, but I will use hot if it is better? the cycle I choose I think will be regular, because I want to spin as much water out as possible for drying? There is no extra rinse option, but I could run them through a second time without soap? I would rather not because of the expense, time and waer and tear on items. So that brings me to soaps. I guess I will use a very small amount of soap. A gentle soap without additives seems to be the consensus, but there is little agreement if it matters if it is real soap or detergent? Maybe it doesn't matter? And how do I know about additives, since they are not listed? I hate the fragrance added to Woolite, and it no longer seems available, just a bunch of specialized detergents with their label. So unless one of thoose is your top recommendation, I have been thinking of using a liquid product I have, called Dr Jacob's Naturals - castille liquid soap, honey almond Face and Body Wash. It is softer on the skin than Dr Bronner's liquid castle soaps(which I also have), but maybe this is because it has oils added to it? If so, would it weight down the loft? Another option that I have on hand is Seventh Generation laundry detergent, which I use regularly for my laundry? Or one site said to just use 2cups of white vinegar, with not soap, but it did not say how big of olad the two cups would do, and I think a soap or detergent would be much better? Or I can go to Fred's or Safeway and get something? Please do you have recommendations on the soap? Please advise. I will trust your opnion. One last thing. Should I dry these on low heat forever, or can I dry them hot? I am not consirned about the cover shrinking. I don't want to damage the feathers and down. Thank You Carol Lucas

Expert Response

Hi Carol,
We don't have any specialist that deal with textiles or laundry.  I did look at several websites and there is a lot of information out there.  I thought this website looked like it had some helpful hints: https://www.sleepfoundation.org/best-bedding/how-to-wash-a-down-comforter#how-often-should-you-wash-a-down-comforter -- but all comforters are not created equal, and the washing instructions may vary, especially when dealing with older down items.
