Rock Mnt Juniper #872808

Asked June 12, 2024, 1:50 PM EDT

I would like to plant 3 Rocky Mnt Juniors in an equilateral triangle shape.  How far apart should I plant them so they form a visual break, not necessarily a solid screen.

Expert Response

Hi Jim,

The width of Rocky Mountain juniper varies - anywhere from 5 feet to 15 feet wide. If you are planting a specific cultivar, I would check the mature width and then divide that in half. If the cultivar is 10 feet wide at maturity, then you should plant the trees a minimum of five feet apart. Since you don't want a screen, you could increase that to 8-10 feet apart, depending.

They will look more gappy and spaced out when young, but will fill in over time.
