Weeds in permeable paver driveways #872780

Asked June 12, 2024, 11:38 AM EDT

A few years ago, we installed permeable paver driveways to prevent water runoff. They have functioned well BUT we are getting a lot of weeds between the pavers, many I can't weed out by hand. I'm looking for something less toxic than Round Up to control the weeds. Vinegar and water? A less toxic product? We have three driveways, and I don't want to spend my summer weeding.

Expert Response

The challenge with pavers is how the sand/soil between pavers captures weed seeds. The least invasive way to manage the weeds is hand or tool removal. There is no evidence that vinegar and water will manage weeds and grass. As you mention, chemical treatment is another option. There are some organic products that may work. Of note, once you have eliminated the weeds and grass there is a sealing treatment, that can be done professionally, that will reduce the sprouting of weed seeds between your pavers.
