Soil Testing and Book Recommendations #872764

Asked June 12, 2024, 10:17 AM EDT

Hi, I'm a UF MG in west central Florida. My daughter recently purchased a home in Cleveland Heights, and the yard is completely bare. I want to help her with landscape design, so I'm hoping you can recommend some books that will help her pick out appropriate trees, shrubs, and ground cover. Do you also have kits for soil testing that she can pick up or have mailed out to her? Thank you very much!

Cuyahoga County Ohio

Expert Response

She can contact her county extension office about the soil testing for her area.  They will either have the kits or are able to direct her on where to find them.
The library will be the best resource for trees for the Cleveland area. Depending on what she wants them for: shade, privacy or fruit, they will have a variety of books.
Trees of North America by Alan Mitchell is an excellent reference.
It sounds like she is starting with the correct first steps.  Good Luck and thank you for contacting Ask a Master Gardener.
