Worms defoliating Jostaberry #872763

Asked June 12, 2024, 10:11 AM EDT

What larva is this and how can I treat the infestation? Will the fruit ripen and be useable?

Expert Response

I am unable to magnify your photo to see what insect you are referring to.  However, most insects do damage specific to a particular part of a plant.  These seem to prefer leaves.  It shouldn't affect the fruit unless the plant doesn't have enough energy to do so.  I am giving you a link to a page about various insects.  However, you can purchase an insecticide that is labeled for edibles so the fruit will still be able to be eaten.  Read the labell and/or ask for help at your locally owned garden center.  You could even bring one of the insects in with you for help in identifying it.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/flower-insects

I was referring to a green worm on the top of the leaf edge in the first picture.

It is still not clear enough to see particulars.  It is most probably cankerworms.  Although the link refers to trees, they also infest shrubs.  Open the drop down box for spring/fall cankerworms.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/caterpillars-ornamental-plants
