Your request would be reasonable and in-line with the spirit and intent of the ordinance.  However, the township, strictly by the letter of the law, would not be required to approve your request.  I would recommend reaching out to the township zoning administrator prior to submitting a variance application to discuss the request.  This way, you can get a sense of whether the township may be favorable to your request before spending several hundred dollars for the hearing.  Please feel free to write back if you have any additional questions or need more clarification.
