Wrong spot for a Rejoice Crabapple? #872754

Asked June 12, 2024, 9:37 AM EDT

Hello, my husband and I are in the beginnings of making a memorial garden for our 6-year old grandson who passed. We just purchased a beautiful Rejoice Crabapple and two young men from the nursery where we purchased it planted it yesterday. I was surprised when they asked where they should plant it. I had no idea; but, I assumed they would. They took pictures of where they thought would be a good place to put it, and sent them to the owner of the nursery. She said the tree would work in the spot they chose. This morning I was reading info on Rejoice Crabapple. It said this tree needs full sun. There's no full sun where they planted it. It will receive some morning sun and afternoon sun; but, not full. I'm really worried. This was an expensive purchase. I would welcome your thoughts and ideas on this. Also, have you ever used a "Tree gator?" Thanks so much for anything you can tell me. Debbie Anderson

Expert Response

Apple trees, including Crabapples, need full sun to flower and fruit. That generally means 6 hours or more a day. That could be morning and afternoon sun if combined, they total 6 or more hours.

If you feel they put your tree in the wrong place, I would call the nursery and have someone knowledgeable come out to assess the situation. Your tree should be warranted.

The tree gators are great. They offer a slow drip which means you are watering deeply. You want the trees roots to reach deep for water as that will help it in times of drought. If we don’t continue to get good rainfall, make sure your tree gets 10 gallons per week. Keep it well watered until the ground freezes this year. Keep it well watered for the first 3 years to give it a long life.
