Hi, can you tell if these are weeds or goldenrods (or something else)?

Expert Response

Flowers are key to plant ID, but the growth habit and foliage on the pictured plants look like a match for Horseweed (also called Marestail). It's a very common annual native plant, and is considered a weed in garden settings. It should be easy to pull up, though you can cut it down (repeatedly if needed) to kill it as well. There are dozens of species of native goldenrod, and their foliage can be dissimilar to each other, so any other plants suspected of being goldenrod may need to flower first before their ID can be confirmed.
