top dressing flowerbeds #872733

I have established flowerbeds and need to improve the soil, both texture and nutrients. I know that I can top dress with compost, i was thinking of mint mulch but there is no way that I can dig it in to a depth of 8 inches around my plants. I am 77 and the plants are too close together. Any suggestions?

You do not have to dig in the material on established plants, but one to two inches of good organic matter such as compost or worm castings will improve the soil life and thus the soil productivity nicely.
