What’s on my Weeping Cherry tree bark? #872718

Asked June 11, 2024, 9:56 PM EDT

Hello garden gurus! My Weeping Cherry tree bark is covered in white powdery substance, seemingly overnight! I thought it was a scale disease and washed it with a mild Dawn water and soft brush and the water turned orange. But then someone else suggested it could be lichen? I hope I haven’t hurt it by cleaning it. The leaves seem fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it appears to me that what you have is some type of lichen. Lichens are not harmful to the trees. However, while lichen does not harm the host plant, its presence might be an indicator that the tree or shrub could be under some kind of stress.

Lichens are actually two organisms, a fungi and algae. There are thousands of types of lichens made up of various fungi and algae.
