Volunteering #872675

Asked June 11, 2024, 5:33 PM EDT

Hello! I am interested in the master Gardener program but know that the application is not until the Fall of 2024. So I was wondering if there are ways to volunteer or get involved before becoming a master Gardener? thanks!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Virginia.  Since Master Gardeners are required to know and give advice based upon science, we are not allowed to volunteer with the program until completion of the course, and participation in a hands-on course.  (https://extension.oregonstate.edu/mg/metro/become-master-gardener)     You can get a head start on the subjects the MG training covers by reading some or all of the following OSU publications:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/documents/10446/helpful-publications-osu-extension-fall
tips.pdf

If you act soon, you can take the same course online (for a fee), but it does not qualify you to become a MG volunteer: https://workspace.oregonstate.edu/certificate/master-gardener-home-horticulture-summer-intensive

You might obtain some valuable experience in the Friends of Portland Community Gardens, sponsored by the City of Portland:  https://portlandcommunitygardens.org/volunteer/

I'm sorry the requirements are rather inflexible, but we look forward to your involvement in 2025!
