What is damaging my minture boxwoods? #872673

Asked June 11, 2024, 5:20 PM EDT

Our boxwoods are approximately 24 years old. They are trimmed and fertilized annually. This winter/spring, many have developed brown dead spots. Can you help me : 1) identify what is causing this? 2) how do we treat it? 3) will they recover or do we need to replace them? 4) If there is a local resource in the Salem/Keizer area, please provide their contact information. Thank You

Expert Response

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of issues with boxwoods this year especially those planted in full sun or late afternoon sun. Our landscape plants have been through several years of stress (heat, cold, ice, heat dome, drought). And it's finally catching up. Many plants are showing these exact symptoms. It may be due to sunburn or possibly the effects of the ice storm and freeze event we had this year.

Your best option is to carefully prune out the dead branches. It's possible that the plant will send out new leaves and shoots to fill in those bare areas. If you're not sure if a branch is dead then do the flex test. Gently bend the branch, if it snaps then it is dead. If it flexes then it is still alive and may produce new leaves.

Best of luck!
Thank you for the prompt response and information.  We’re going try pruning out the deadwood.

Have a great week.
