Trimming long branches #872650

Asked June 11, 2024, 3:34 PM EDT

Would it be OK to trim back some of these newly grown branches on my Northwind Korean Maple? Difficult to mow around, nearly touching the ground. I plan to get a wider ring of mulch around the base. Thanks!!!

Expert Response

Maples can be trimmed any time.  Go ahead and trim those branches up.  Don't just trim a little bit but trim close to where they come off the branch,  Just leave a little bit in place.  Look for the area that is a raised ring around the base of the branch.  You want to leave that on the tree.  That is where the tree has its defenses against disease.
