Italian Prune tree curling leaf with critters inside #872590

Our young prune tree produced new leaves in May and currently many of the leaves are curled and some have black splotches inside. Others appear to have tiny insect eggs which are light-colored and long/narrow in shape. How should I treat the problem?

Hi Janie,
Thank you for your question regarding leaf curling on your Italian Prune tree. I cannot get clear image resolution to definitively determine the insect from your photos. That said, it may be leafroller. When you unroll the leaf, you will see a small caterpillar, usually green or brown. You may also see chewing on the leaf. Often, you’ll find brown or greenish frass (this is insect excrement) inside the leaf.
