The highest risk period for Oak Wilt Disease is April 15 through July 15. Pruning oak trees during this time should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. It is best to only prune oaks during dormancy when the wilt fungus is not active.
If you must prune an oak now, then the wounds must be sealed with a pruning sealer or water based paint within 5 minutes of the cut being made. Fresh cuts can attract the beetles that carry the fungus that quickly.
Any wood removed must be disposed of properly, or covered completely, since the wood can attract beetles to the area as well.
