Liparis Lillifolia - native orchid #872564

Asked June 11, 2024, 9:41 AM EDT

A native orchard - the Liparis Lillfolia has popped up in my Eagan yard. How rare is this? is there a place I should report this native orchid? I see it is "of concerned" in several states but can not find information about Minnesota. We were participating in No Mow May

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Good Afternoon Laura,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

How amazing that a native orchid would pop up in No Mow May. Maybe nature is trying to tell you something!

Here is a link from the North American Orchid Center about this orchid: https://goorchids.northamericanorchidcenter.org/species/liparis/liliifolia/

If you review the details, it does not appear to be endangered. I have never seen one in person, that I know of.

Here is a link to Minnesotawildflowers.org website about the orchid in Minnesota: https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/lily-leaved-twayblade

If you review the website, there is detailed information about which counties it is considered "native" in. Dakota county is one of them. If you scroll down, there are many postings of peole who have sited the plant in the wild. You might want to post your siting there, or on the INaturalist app. I'd try to do several photos of the blooms up close and from the side and also the foilage.

Best question! Made my day!
