insect identification #872505

Asked June 10, 2024, 6:55 PM EDT

Hello.  When I am out in my yard, I get bitten by a small, black insect that is maybe 2 or 3 millimeters long.  It isn't a spider or ant, it is a flying insect.  When it is biting me, the bite is painful but then the pain goes away.  I'm sorry I don't have a picture.  It happens too quickly.  Would you happen to know what this insect is?  Thank you for your help.

Expert Response

Hi,

That sounds like a blackfly (Simulium sp.). Or it could be a biting midge, aka a sandfly (Family Ceratopogonidae). While these insects are capable of transmitting disease, the diseases themselves are either extremely rare, or do not occur in the United States.
