I would like to know what perennial Vine for privacy I could plant on a metal fence that would get good coverage fairly quick and stay covered in the winter time. I like it to smell goods and look fantastic.

Hi Joy,

The first two that come to mind are an evergreen Clematis Armandii, variety Apple Blossom with white flowers that have a very sweet vanilla scent.  This is a woody evergreen perennial vine that can grow 20 feet, blooms early to mid spring and takes full sun or part shade, hardy in Zone 8b our local zone.  This plant attracts pollinators both bees and butterflies.

Another Clematis x cartmanii variety Blaaval.  This is a woody evergreen perennial vine but only grows to about 12 feet, early to mid spring bloom full sun to part shade.  Grows quickly and acts as a privacy screen, massive clusters of flower.

The second is Carolina Jessamine or Jasmine with yellow flowers.
Carolina jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens) has a sweet, heady scent.  The scent is close to Asiatic lilies to my nose. The flowers bloom from February to April and cover the plant's fine-textured foliage. The flowers are similar to honeysuckle.

Another jasmine, Madagascar jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda) is an evergreen vine. It can grow up to 20 feet tall and wide. This woody climber has glossy, oval leaves and fragrant white flowers that bloom in the spring. Grows in full sun to part shade.  Likes rainy weather.

Another common jasmine is Star Jasmine, similar attributes to Madagascar jasmine.

Honeysuckle vine is very hardy but can be invasive, however, Graham Thomas variety is particularly aromatic and grows rapidly.

Climbing roses abound with various varieties that are heavily scented and are evergreen.  Most nurseries have several varieties to choose from.

With your request for an evergreen vine that also has fragrant flowers, while I found many, most are Clematis, Jasmine and Roses.

When selecting a vine, do look it up and see if it has any issues with the weather, or being invasive.  Some of the vines can become very heavy, will your fence hold up?  If they are very fast growers, do you want to prune them?  And do they have any special needs?

If you purchase it from a nursery ask those questions, they should be able to tell you a lot about the plant.

If you have further questions, please contact us again Joy.
