I recently had a tree cut down and now the stump is oozing a smelly slime and flies are everywhere. I only want to use the stump as a plant holder. How can I stop this ooze?

Because bacteria that produce the slime feed on sap, the slime is likely to dry up when the sap flow ends. How long that will be, we don't know, but more likely a matter of weeks than months.
