I have 2 river birch trees that have leaves on the top (like a dome or mushroom), but no leaves on the inside, or the branches on the inside are dead. Is this normal, or what does it need to flourish?

Hi Susan,
It looks like the trees have been aggressively shaped and pruned and the canopies have become so thick that sunlight isn't reaching the lower branches. The trees look healthy. See this page:
