stanley prune tree problem #872422
Asked June 10, 2024, 1:09 PM EDT
I have a 3 - 4 year old stanley prune tree that has been doing well since planted (now about 8 feet tall), but this year the tree leafed out but the leaves are staying small and on some branches the leaves yellowed and dried up. I see no signs of insects, just the small leaves. I cut off the impacted branches, cleaning the shears with alcohol after each cut. Not sure what else to look for or to do to help the tree. It gets plenty of water from a sprinkler system.
It is planted in an area where a lilac bush was planted and died a couple years before the tree was planted as a bare root.

Expert Response
Hi,
Thank you for contacting the Boulder County Master Gardeners. The best ways for us to help diagnose the problem with your tree would be for you to send pictures showing the whole tree and closeups of the damage. Additionally you can bring in a sample of the damaged leaves on a branch to the extension office. We are located in the Boulder County Fairgrounds on Nelson road in Longmont.
Please send your photos and any additional info to us directly at <personal data hidden>
When you bring in your sample, there is a detailed form for you to fill out regarding how the tree was planted and your continuing care regarding watering and fertilizing.
